Reset password
Users who do not manager their own passwords will need the HotSOS administrator to reset their passwords. People forget passwords - it happens. In trying to get the password right, a user might make a number of unsuccessful attempts and ultimately find themselves locked out.
-
We increased the lock-out time from fifteen to thirty minutes when a user makes 6 unsuccessful attempts to log in. Once the lock is set, it can be reset by users with Unit Personnel Manager, Unit Department Administrator, or Administrator (HotSOS Select). Learn more in Personnel details
-
Users who change their password more than 5 times in a day (24-hour window) are blocked from logging in for 24 hours. Upon the 6th attempt, HotSOS displays this message: You exceeded your daily password change limit.
Resetting passwords
To make your life easier, consider creating a generic password format that meets all the requirements, but one you can easily increment by 1 should you have to reset a single password more than once. For example, HotSOS99!.
Password minimum requirements:
- 8 characters minimum
- 1 letter
- 1 number
- 1 special character, for example, ! # * $
- Cannot reuse the last 11 passwords.
The user will be prompted to change the password each time it is reset.
Whenever a user creates a new password, it gets evaluated by the password deny list. No matches ensure a strong password. If the password you create matches one in the deny list, a message lets you know the password is too common. Try another password.
What is a password deny list?
A password deny list lists words disallowed as user passwords due to their commonplace use. Deny lists may also incorporate rules to prevent the use of common passwords with frequently-used modifications such as capital letters, standard substitutions, or numbers following the words. Our deny list has millions of entries.
